The Story Behind the Painting

A city has its own rhythm.

There is the movement of water, the crossing of bridges, the shifting light across the skyline, and the quiet energy of people moving through it.  City Strings on the Bridge captures that rhythm through an abstract impression of the RIchmond skyline, where the familiar landscape begins to merge with the shape and spirit of an acoustic guitar.

The bridge becomes more than a place of passage.  It becomes a musical bridge, connecting the city, the river, and the feeling of sound carried through a place.  Within the shifting layers of sky, water, and light, the suggestions of a guitar emerges almost intuitively — a reminder that meant, like the city, is always moving, always changing, and always creating connection.

City Strings on the Bridge is an invitation to pause and find the music within the landscape.

This painting was inspired by a photograph of Richmond by photographer Bill Draper (billdraperphotography.com), whose image provided the foundation for my abstract interpretation.
